"Well-known for their 'Cliff and The Shadows' styled Rock'n'roll, on this CD they also explore some other early Sixties themes.
Although they have released several vinyl EPs, a 10.00-inch all instrumental vinyl LP, a CD of restrospective recordings and played hundreds of concerts - this is THE RAPIERS' first CD release in almost ten years. This CD is all you'd expect from THE RAPIERS - classic instrumentals, a few 60's numbers, and Shadows soundalikes. The opening track has been self-penned by Colin Pryce-Jones, but if you didn't know different, you would swear it was an old Shadows track. This CD is purely for THE RAPIERS enthusiast. Red Hot'n'Rockin'
The title refers to an advertising campaign for Strand cigarettes from back in the early Sixties ('You're never alone with a Strand'). The cigarette brand is long gone, but the music lives on! Long-time Rapiers fans will know that they will only record to get exactly the sound that they want. In the past, they have successfully 'cloned' the Cliff and The Shadows early Sixties sound, but this time they have added in some other influences. They are obviously fans of the kind of childrens' TV puppet shows that were prevalent in the Sixties (Thunderbirds, etc.). Try to imagine that famous song 'Fireball XL5' by The Shadows and you're getting there.
They've added in a 'squeaky' organ sound on some songs and it balances wonderfully with THE RAPIERS' 'sound'. Add to this their breadth of knowledge of music from the time and, as ever, they have come up with a great selection of covers interspersed with originals which all sit together nicely on this CD. They've obviously been a bit influenced by some of the craziness generated by the late Screaming Lord Sutch (they backed him many times), because their version of 'Good golly Miss Molly' is one of the wildest ever. The spirit of Joe Meek lives on. Rock'n'Roll Universe"
